Fly tipping in the countryside

In this article, we look at the role fly-tipping CCTV cameras play in detecting and deterring this ongoing threat and nuisance. As a business owner or facilities manager, having to deal with piles of rubbish dumped in your car park, or around your premises on a regular basis, is problematic.

Over the past few months, various businesses that are dealing with this threat have contacted us to gain insight into their fly-tipping CCTV options. Some of these businesses had existing CCTV systems requiring an upgrade, while others had no security measures in place.

Throughout this article, we give an overview of the different fly-tipping CCTV camera systems, and how they can help mitigate this threat. Furthermore, to offer some practical insights, we also cover a couple of examples of CCTV systems we have deployed to deter fly-tipping.

The Businesses Most Impacted by Fly-Tipping

Fly-tipping is often considered a rural crime. However, it also affects urban and industrial commercial settings, too. The business most impacted by fly-tipping are:

  • Farms
  • Industrial Units
  • Abandoned factories
  • Office blocks with large car parks (normally without CCTV in place)
  • Businesses in rural locations

There are many challenges for businesses associated with fly-tipping. A recent report by waste management company BKP shows the cost to landowners for the disposal of illegal waste is between £86,000,000 – £186,000,000  every year.

Furthermore, a recent article in the Daily Echo highlights the issue and how businesses deal with it.

In the next section of this article, we look at fly-tipping CCTV cameras and how they can help manage this threat.

Fly-Tipping CCTV Cameras – Detecting & Deterring Illegal Dumping

If you want to catch people in the act, an investment in fly-tipping CCTV cameras is a wise choice.

In fact, unless you have a security team patrolling every inch of your premises, inside and out, every minute of the day, CCTV really is the only choice.

There a range of CCTV solutions we recommend to help deal with fly-tipping:

These include:

  • HD & IP CCTV
  • CCTV monitoring
  • ANPR camera systems

HD & IP Commercial CCTV Systems – Monitored Internally

You will need sharp CCTV footage and crystal clear images to catch and apprehend fly-tippers.

Dependent on your current IT infrastructure, a robust HD or IP CCTV system will provide quality footage, and act as a visual deterrent to fly-tippers.

CCTV Monitoring

If you are looking for 24/7 security for your premises or site, we would recommend a robust CCTV monitoring system.

With remote CCTV monitoring, you can have your security cameras monitored 24/7 by a team of security professionals.

Cameras use sensors or infrared beams to detect threats and alert your security team, if needed.

Upon viewing the footage, if they spot a security threat, the keyholder or authorities are notified to help apprehend the intruder.

ANPR Systems

For sites that are at risk of regular flytipping, an ANPR system is an effective security system to deploy.

These cameras capture a vehicle number plate, which gets fed to a database.

You can then pass this information to the authorities, along with the CCTV footage, to help catch the culprits.

You can find out more about these systems by visiting our page dedicated to ANPR systems.

One of the current security issues they’re having to deal with is flytipping, which has become more commonplace during the pandemic.

With the new fly-tipping CCTV cameras in place, if someone uses their car park as a rubbish dump, the higher-spec cameras, which provide sharper footage, will help to apprehend those responsible.
